Two Dimensional Reality - Brodie McClain
After World War II the soldiers came home. Away from the brutal environment of death and loss, they came home to prosperity, to growth, with a desire to settle down and live good lives. They bought new cars, new homes, new wives, a couple of kids, and showed great promise for a generation which would issue in the latest and best trends in America. They had fought for their country and they brought home peace and victory.

They also brought home the television set, at first with a few channels, everyone would gather as if watching the baby’s first steps, and be in awe of the wonderful steps we had all made in society. The television sets became more popular, sales were up, and the market was growing. Soon households everywhere had their own set, and producers made it possible to view six or seven programs on any given night. What progress! What freedom!

The baby-boomers grew accustomed to their old faithful friend in the living room, and found that with each year, this fabulous two-dimensional picture screen got clearer and clearer. It got clearer and it got color, and wow, what an amazing feat we had made! …and it was, until videocassette recorders came on the scene. Unbelievable! Movies on your very own television, that was truly the greatest thing to happen to America. It seemed so until cable arrived and turned thirteen channels into fifty-five, and then big-screen TV’s, and surround sound, and satellite dishes, and now the complete home entertainment center. What a dream! This was certainly worth fighting for.

Or was it…
