A Payne Worth Remembering - Terry Lasseter
As a fellow golf professional I was saddened by the news of Payne Stewart's death. I came home and turned on the TV to hear the news that golf great Payne Stewart was killed in a plane crash. He was on his way from Orlando to Dallas and the plane crashed in South Dakota after running out of fuel.

Payne Stewart had one of the best years of his life. He had his best year professionally, winning twice on the PGA tour. His victories included his second U.S. Open victory of his career. He also had one of his best years personally. The reason for this was his growth in his relationship with God. His friends said that they could see the enormous change in him. Mark O'Meara, one of his close friends could see how much Payne valued his family time. Payne truly understood his role as a golfer and a father. When Payne was home he was a devoted father and husband. Mark and Payne both missed the cut at the tournament the previous week before his death and both of them got to see their kids play football. Payne remarked that it was a great weekend even though he missed the cut at the tournament because he saw his son, Aaron score his first touchdown.

Payne's death was tragic and a shock to everyone. His memorial service was televised nationally. People got to hear some great stories about him from his friends and family. The one thing that struck me about the service was the strength of Payne's wife, Tracey. A loved one's death is a difficult thing to deal with. Tracey was very strong and her strength could only come from one place, God. Most people struggle immensely but Tracey was able to pull herself together. Tracey knew that God had a reason why he chose to take Payne from this world. Her faith in God carried her through this difficult time. We can not begin to understand God's reasons for the things he does. There was a reason God decided to take Payne Stewart's life that day. There are no answers as to why God did this, only guesses. God loves everyone and has an ultimate plan in mind. God did not take Payne Stewart from this world just to bring sadness to his family, friends, and fellow tour players. God chose to take Payne away from this world when he was at the top. God did this so through his death people would realize the significance and importance of having God as the center of your life. God used Payne's life and death to spread the gospel and share his unconditional love and forgiveness with everyone.

Payne was known to his fellow tour players as a very willing person to help in any situation. The city of Orlando will always remember his generosity. His family will always remember his willingness to serve God and his love for them. Payne, you will be missed dearly by all. God's love will endure forever.
