Maximum Vapor: The Quarterly Newsletter of Loxafamosity Ministries
A Shirt a Day Keeps Abortion AwayIf the average high schooler knew what abortion is and does, abortion would all but disappear from the schools, and it would eventually disappear altogether. Beginning this fall, Abort73.com is enlisting students from around the country to wear an Abort73 shirt onto their campus everyday for an entire semester. These shirts, in turn, are designed to introduce other students to Abort73.com, pique their curiosity, and bring them into the website. The basic operating principle is this. T-shirts, in themselves, are not a sufficient forum for making an adequate case against abortion. They can convey right opinions, “Abortion is Murder”, “Choose Life”, etc., but without compelling facts, minds will not change. The depth and breadth of what must be communicated cannot happen on a shirt. As such, Abort73 takes a different approach. We don’t use our shirts to educate. We use our shirts to help bring people to a place where they can be educated, thoroughly and completely.

DOES IT WORK? - Consider the following testimony from Granada Hills, CA:

I was a lost and confused 15 year old... I thought I was pregnant and considered my options. Abortion seemed a fair enough option as no one would ever know (especially my parents). I saw my friend wearing a shirt that said “Abort73”. I didn’t ask her about it, but I was curious what it was about. Later when I got home I visited the site - after 5 minutes my jaw dropped and I realized just how horrible abortion was. Thank you abort73! I am convinced.

WHY EVERYDAY? - Movie marketing experts estimate that a person must see a movie ad at least 8 times before they will go and see the movie. Without steady repetition, the mind forgets. If we apply this equation to the Abort73 website, we can conclude that high-schoolers may need to see an Abort73 T-shirt 8 times before they’ll actually visit the site...

• AUDIO ABORTION SERMONS - Abortion-related, MP3 audio sermons are now available, free of charge on the Abort73 website, from selected pastors around the country, including John Piper, Albert Martin, Mark Chanski. Jack Hughes, Alistair Begg and Erwin Lutzer.

• ENDORSEMENTS - Many of the endorsements that Abort73 has received from individuals across the country can now be read online. Visit Abort73.com/endorsements and take a look.

• NEW PAGE: ILLEGAL ABORTIONS - This page includes testimony from a variety of pro-abortion sources, and exposes the absurd claim that tens of thousands of women were dying each year from illegal “back-alley” abortions prior to Roe v. Wade.

• NEW PAGE: STATE ABORTION LAWS - In addition to a host of information on parental-notification laws, waiting periods and partial-birth abortion bans, this page also includes links to all the state affiliates of the National Right to Life and a gateway to exhaustive, state-specific abortion fact sheets.

• SHIRTS / STICKERS - We’ve added some new designs to the Abort73 line, many of which include provocative statements like “End the Ignorance”, “Fight Injustice” and “Light a Fire”, all aimed at enticing more people into the Abort73 website.

Nurturing DesperationThe following comes from part 2 of a 3-part Sunday School series taught by Michael Spielman in March of 2003.

Here is my council, to me first and also to you: Overextend yourself for the kingdom of God. Bite off way more than you can chew. Until we come to the end of our own abilities, we will never experience the desperation necessary to drive us to our knees in any meaningful way. If we live “small” and manageable Christian lives, avoiding all the extremes, we will likely be able to survive in our own strength and won’t have to trouble with anything like getting up in the morning to wrestle in prayer with the King. However, if we place ourselves in situations which put us in over our heads, we will, by necessity, be driven into constant and focused fellowship with the only One who can satisfy our souls. If we don’t delight in prayer, if our mind cannot focus on He who is an ever-present help in time of despair (Psalm 46:1), then we are obviously risking way too little for the kingdom of God. If we want to get into the game, we need to get in over our heads.

I am calling last week’s previously untitled message, “Rescuing Wayward Affections,” for that is what it entails. As way of review, I identified three culprits that contribute to my lack of focus and my failure to delight in God over and above all other competing desires. Number one: I do not remind myself each morning what is at stake in this fight of faith. For example, when I forget that I’m in a war, and I forget that the strength of the Spirit is my only hope for triumph, I become cavalier about my time with the Lord, viewing it as option rather than necessity...

The Most Bang for Your BuckOn the surface, Abort73 looks like a fairly big operation: fancy website, glossy newsletter, lots of merchandise, but looks can be deceiving. Though we’ve certainly worked hard to come across as well-branded and professional, we remain remarkably small. This means both that we lack the physical resources enjoyed by larger non-profits, but also that those who invest in our ministry have the opportunity to play a more proportionately significant role. Think of it this way, over the last three months, a mere 39 people shouldered the entire donation load for Loxafamosity Ministries, giving a total of $4,418 in support of Abort73.com. Our next new donor will be the 40th of the quarter, and they’ll instantly become .025% of our donor base. If they write a check for $1000, their gift would account for a whopping 18% of total donations received. That’s a huge chunk. On the other hand, if this same individual were to give to a pro-life group with 10,000 donors, they would only increase the giving base by .0001%. Giving their $1000 to an organization that brings in $125,000 for any three month period, their gift would account for a mere .008%. We don’t say this to knock any of the bigger-budget ministries (we hope to be one someday), but we do want to point out that Abort73 is uniquely positioned to offer donors the opportunity to play a far more significant role than they could with just about anyone else. Of course, being small, in itself, is not what commends us. If Abort73.com weren’t accomplishing anything,...

Justice for All (JFA), a pro-life organization based in Wichita, KS, provided Abort73 some valuable new marketing opportunities this September. Three times a year, JFA travels to Colorado Springs to train college students at the Focus on the Family Institute. JFA partners with Steve Wagner from Stand to Reason (str.org) to provide the 88 students with a full day of pro-life instruction. Not only are the students schooled in the many arguments against abortion, they’re also given an approach which seeks to communicate the message with grace and humility. After a day in the classroom, the Focus students then travel with JFA to a major Colorado university for two days on campus with JFA’s massive photo-mural exhibit (you can see the exhibit online at http://jfaweb.org/exhibit.html). This fall, JFA took their exhibit to the Auraria Higher Education Center in downtown Denver and invited Abort73 Director, Mike Spielman, to join them, both in their training and exhibition. The Auraria campus actually houses three schools, Metro State Denver, CU Denver, and the Community College of Denver and has a combined enrollment of 33,000 students. During his week in Colorado, Mike got to introduce all of the Focus Institute students and faculty to the Abort73 website, and got to put the website in front of the students from two Denver Christian high schools who were also trained for the exhibit. JFA has plans to begin incorporating Abort73 merchandise into their high school training program on a regular basis, which will provide us with some more valuable exposure in the months and years to come.
Fundraising, Fundraising, Fundraising
The coming months will, by necessity, be devoted almost exclusively to fundraising as we seek to hire a director of development and a full or part-time administrator. Once those positions are filled, we’ll also be looking for a web programmer, an ad director, and an office manager (once we hire an office manager, we may need an office as well). Pray for our efforts as we seek to grow.
