Fixing the HeartThe greatest commandment in all the world is given in these terms, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39).

If people loved God and loved other people with all their heart, abortion would not exist. At its most basic level, abortion is a heart problem. Laws can fix behavior (to a point), but they cannot fix the heart. Laws can be effective at preventing murder, but they can do nothing to prevent hate. Laws can help eliminate rape, but there is no law that can eliminate lust. All moral problems are ultimately problems of the heart. This does not mean that laws have no value. Laws have huge value, society could not function without them. What it does mean is that we can’t stop at just passing laws. We (as Christians) must pursue the truer, deeper solution. We must address the heart.

If we go all the way back to the outset of human history, we read this, “The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.” (Genesis 6: 5, 6).

The moral deficiency of the human heart is not a contemporary phenomenon. It took very little time for human beings, perfectly created in the image of God, to descend into an existence which God describes as “only evil [all the time]”. How did we get there? 2 Chronicles 12:14 tells us that evil naturally pours forth from the heart that doesn’t seek God, and what is human history but a long series of people and cultures who don’t seek God? The tragic irony is that, in turning away from God, believing we can better secure happiness on our own terms, we have turned our back on the only source that can legitimately satisfy the human soul. The prophet Jeremiah, speaking on God’s behalf, helps establish this point by defining evil this way:

My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. -- Jeremiah 2:13

• WEB PAGE REORGANIZATION - We changed the name of our “Navigation” section to “Interaction” and relocated all of our interactive forms to this location. Here, visitors can leave feedback, write an endorsement or join the message board. We also reworked the “Bringing an End to Abortion” section to more clearly explain the thinking behind Abort73 while still offering visitors an array of practical ways to get involved.

• ULTRASOUND IMAGERY - We’ve added ultrasound pictures and video to the medical illustrations and photography already contained in our “Prenatal Development” section.

• NEW PAGE: FIXING THE HEART - This page exists as a companion to our “Fixing the Law” section. Essentially, it is a reminder that this is not just an educational / legislative battle we’re fighting.

• NEW PAGE: INSIDE THE ABORTION CLINIC - This page is a companion to our “Real Life Testimony” section and provides a thorough and harrowing first hand account of what its like to have an abortion from inside the clinic.

• NEW T’S, LONG-SLEEVES AND SWEATSHIRTS - We recently conducted the first ever Abort73 T-shirt design contest. Six new T-shirts were the result, and we’ve since added a new long-sleeve shirt and 3 new sweatshirts.

Pursuing CrownsThe following comes from part 3 of a 3-part Sunday School series taught by Michael Spielman in April of 2003.

You’ve got me for one more time this morning, and I thank you again for your willingness to journey with me in this worthy pursuit. Two weeks ago I set out to address a failure in my own life, namely the problem of misplaced affections. Why is it that when my alarm goes off in the morning, my heart would rather stay in bed than spend time with the Creator of the universe and the Savior of my soul? And why is it that, once I do get up, my attention drifts to all manner of lesser things? To the best of my ability, through the light of the Word, I suggested to you (and to myself), three culprits. Number one, I don’t remind myself what’s at stake each morning. Number two, I’m spending too much time on the spiritual sidelines. Number three, I’m trying to maximize my enjoyment now, rather than pursuing the lasting and perfect enjoyment that can only be attained in the life to come.

These three culprits relate to each other like this: I don’t recognize what’s at stake, because I’m not in the game, because I want to live life on my own leisurely terms. But what lies beneath this three headed monster? What is this spiritual lethargy anchored in? To put it bluntly, it is nothing less than a lack of faith, both in my view of hell and in my view of heaven. One day in hell is worse than a lifetime of bearing a cross, and one day in heaven is better than a lifetime of worldly indulgence. The man who gains the whole world but forfeits his soul profits nothing. Rather, he loses everything. Nevertheless, the profits of this world can be seen while the profits of eternity cannot. Here enters the conflict, the great fight of faith. Will ...

Establishing CredibilityFrom the outset, we’ve been hopeful that with enough time, we’d be able to gain the support of some established and well-respected ministries, not primarily for the financial support they could offer, but for the influence their support would have on others. We understand how difficult it is to evaluate the heart and the merits of a new organization, and we know from experience how far the recommendation of a respected source can go. To that end, we’re very grateful for the recent plugs we’ve received from Steve Wagner, Randy Alcorn, Rick Holland and John Piper. Steve Wagner of Stand to Reason (str.org) says, “The teen set is too open-minded to ignore the truth about abortion when it’s presented with stunning visual images and intelligent arguments. Abort73.com meets teens where they live (at their computers) with the perfect set of tools to form a well-reasoned opinion on abortion. Abort73 is now the first thing I recommend to students as they seek to apply the pro-life apologetics I’ve taught them.” Randy Alcorn of Eternal Perspectives (epm.org) adds, “I enthusiastically recommend Abort73.com... [it] communicates the truth about abortion in ways that are holistic, unique, informative and appealing to the next generation... Abort73.com offers a wealth of information for anyone seeking well-documented research. Students addressing abortion in the classroom will find it extremely helpful...” Rick Holland, college pastor of Grace Community Church (gracechurch.org), and Master’s Seminary professor writes, “This week I spent a lot of time on a website that was disturbing. But disturbing is sometimes good. I want...

Justice for All (JFA), a pro-life organization based in Wichita, KS, provided Abort73 some valuable new marketing opportunities this September. Three times a year, JFA travels to Colorado Springs to train college students at the Focus on the Family Institute. JFA partners with Steve Wagner from Stand to Reason (str.org) to provide the 88 students with a full day of pro-life instruction. Not only are the students schooled in the many arguments against abortion, they’re also given an approach which seeks to communicate the message with grace and humility. After a day in the classroom, the Focus students then travel with JFA to a major Colorado university for two days on campus with JFA’s massive photo-mural exhibit (you can see the exhibit online at http://jfaweb.org/exhibit.html). This fall, JFA took their exhibit to the Auraria Higher Education Center in downtown Denver and invited Abort73 Director, Mike Spielman, to join them, both in their training and exhibition. The Auraria campus actually houses three schools, Metro State Denver, CU Denver, and the Community College of Denver and has a combined enrollment of 33,000 students. During his week in Colorado, Mike got to introduce all of the Focus Institute students and faculty to the Abort73 website, and got to put the website in front of the students from two Denver Christian high schools who were also trained for the exhibit. JFA has plans to begin incorporating Abort73 merchandise into their high school training program on a regular basis, which will provide us with some more valuable exposure in the months and years to come.
Abort73 DVDs We’re developing a new DVD to be professionally packaged in full-color, cardboard envelopes for individual distribution to high school and college students. It will include the videos from the website and will also be a gateway to Abort73.com.
Fund-raising DVDs We’re also putting together a video aimed at quickly communicating the heart of Abort73 for those we approach for financial help.
